Part Two of Two
[March 13, 1995] -- Charles Silva is a distinguished looking man, compactly built, black hair flecked with traces of gray, a perfectly trimmed mustache, and just enough accent in his speech to identify him as foreign born. He is a citizen of Peru who came to the United States at the age of 14, got a green card, finished school in California, learned perfect English, and went to work for the Hollywood film industry, where he soon became successful enough to, in his words, "join the jet set." He never felt the need or inclination to become a U.S. citizen. Nor did he ever imagine that his Hollywood-perfect life would be capsized by a girl from the Pleiades.
But that's what happened -- or at least, that's what he says. Starting in June of 1974, while he was in Peru promoting a new hit film, and lasting until 1978, Charles Silva had frequent face-to-face contact with a beautiful, blond, young-looking woman who called herself Rama and said she and "her people" were from the Pleiades. Silva says she proved it to him in many ways, not the least of which was her ability to contact him telepathically wherever he was. She left for her outpost on the Jovian moon Ganymede in 1978, he says, but she stays in telepathic contact with him to this day.
Silva told his story in a book called "Date with the Gods" in 1977. When he showed it to actress Shirley MacLaine, she asked him to take her to Peru. Their adventures together lasted the next five years, after which MacLaine wrote her famous best-seller, "Out on a Limb."
In that book, and in her 1987 ABC TV mini-series of the same title, she says a character named "David" took her to Peru, taught her about reincarnation and astral projection, and told her about his friend from the Pleiades. In a climactic scene in the film, "David" drives down a winding mountain road in the dead of night, with his eyes closed and his hands off the steering wheel, while MacLaine quivers and screams in the passenger seat. "David" tells her later that his Pleiadian friend (he calls her "Mayan") had put a protective energy field around the vehicle.
The film exaggerated that part, says Charles Silva. "I just had my eyes closed. My hands were still on the wheel."
Silva bristles at MacLaine's claim that "David" is a composite character. "I am David," he says flatly.
Silva says MacLaine broke her promise to tell what she really learned from him about coming events on earth, including geological changes, political upheavals, and alien landings. He says she was pressured to leave all that out of her book by powerful friends, including Bella Abzug and David Rockefeller.
So Silva decided to go on a lecture tour and tell his own story. In his promotional material, he called himself "The Real David from 'Out on a Limb'." Not surprisingly, his lectures and seminars drew large crowds.
It wasn't long, however, before Silva got a letter from Bantam Books, the publisher of "Out on a Limb," warning him that he was illegally using copyrighted material in his lectures. He shot back an angry reply, asking if anyone at Bantam was aware that he had published all this material himself in 1977. Going on the offensive, Silva hired a lawyer and filed suit against Bantam, MacLaine and ABC Pictures.
"It was me and one lawyer against all their lawyers," Silva says. "So we lost, even though we were right. But we did get a signed affidavit from Shirley MacLaine, which says that I am David."
Silva considers that affidavit a victory. But his legal struggle with MacLaine, he thinks, may have caught the attention of other powerful people who didn't want his story to be validated in so public a fashion.
He started lecturing again. And then, in 1991, he found himself under suspicion of child molestation. "I couldn't believe it," he says. "Somebody charged me with first degree molestation of a six year old child." Silva says he thinks the molestation charge against himself, and the similar charge against well-known UFO researcher Wendelle Stevens, were both set-ups. "If you rob a bank, some people might consider you a hero," Silva says. "But if you molest a child, everybody sees you as the scum of the earth. It is the lowest of the low. It totally discredits you."
In Silva's case, it got him deported.
"Because I was not a U.S. citizen, I did not have full legal rights," he says. "I was charged and convicted without a trial. I was held in several different prisons, including Leavenworth. They kept moving me around. They said I was dangerous and belonged in maximum security."
Friends tried to get the press to pay attention to Silva's plight. But, he says, the legal authorities used a clever gambit to keep him essentially incommunicado. Though known by everyone as Charles Silva, his full name is Charles August Silva Hurtado. "So they jailed me under the name of August Hurtado. People came to the prison looking for Charles Silva and were told that no one by that name was there!"
A woman named Linda Monos did find Charles Silva's whereabouts. She began writing to him in prison. He told her his whole story, and she believed him. She began calling on everyone she knew to help Silva. But it was too late. Now that Silva was a convicted felon, his green card was revoked. In late 1994, he was deported.
Linda Monos went with him, and shortly thereafter they were married. And a few months after that, they quietly returned to the United States.
I met Charles Silva at the home of a mutual friend near Los Angeles on March 5. He flatly denied ever molesting any child. He seems certain that his personal knowledge of extraterrestrial visitors and future world events has marked him as a "problem." He is content, for the moment, to remain out of public view. "They have to know I'm here," he says, "because they're not stupid. But as long as I'm quiet, they'll leave me alone."
But he does have a new manuscript written and ready for publication. It tells everything that has happened to him since he published his first book in 1977. "I'm thinking of calling it 'The Other Side of the Limb,'" he says, smiling.
"The whole message is there," he continues. "About the U.S. going broke, about Big Brother coming in. Rama said as soon as the Dow Jones hits 4000, be on the lookout." Silva says massive geological disruption is imminent in California, though not as widespread as predicted by such doom-sayers as Gordon Michael Scallion.
As for alien contact, "Rama says [via telepathy] that she is on stand-by now," Silva declares. He believes there will soon be "mass landings" on the Earth. "It will be mostly Grays and Reptilians, but then Rama's people will come in to put some order when that happens."
What to make of Charles Silva? There are intriguing details that can be checked. It seems likely that he really is "David," as described by Shirley MacLaine. If her story has any validity, then "David"/Silva at least has some remarkable spiritual knowledge and abilities.
No doubt, he was held in jail and deported on a charge of child molestation. But did he molest a child? I don't know, and I'm not sure if anyone can prove otherwise -- but I suspect he did not. If he did not, then why the legal charade? Why hide him, even in prison, under the name "August Hurtado?" Is he THAT dangerous?
What does Charles Silva really know about alien contact, or coming world events? For now, his message sounds tinged with madness. But Silva himself does not seem crazy. Only time, it seems, will tell.
